On July 4th to 7th 2011, Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) has conducted a familiarisation programme for lecturers with the industries. This program involved lecturers from University Putra Malaysia (UPM), University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah as well. During these four days trip, lecturers have been exposed to the real pictures of current industry technology and market for downstream processes such as moulding, furniture, framework and wood composites.

JULY 4TH, 2011
We headed for PGRM's tower at 7.45 from PSA by van. Today was not our lucky day, caught in the middle of traffic jam at Federal highway.

Thanks to our driver, Mr. Nizam for kept us in schedule by using another alternative route to confirm our presentation at MTC's office in time. We arrived at PGRM's tower lobby almost 8.30 a.m.

Welcoming briefing at MTC's conference room.

Upon ariving, we hurried to MTC's office at 20th floor to have a short welcoming brief. Thanks to MTC for preparing us some breakfast to fill our fuel need. After a short welcoming brief by Pn. Hamidah Abdullah and Mr. Chong Yi Way, this group then get into the bus that provided by the organizer for the first trip to Weng Meng Industries Sdn. Bhd. which is located at Olak Lempit Furniture Complex, Banting, Selangor.

Main entrance of Weng Meng Industries Sdn. Bhd.

At Weng Meng Industries Sdn. Bhd., we are welcomed and briefed by Mrs. Elaine all about this company. In fact, this company is the largest producer of wooden cable drum and they diversified the market oppurtunities by plunging into solid door manufacturing as well as fire resistant door.

At Weng Meng Industries Gallery, from left: Mr. Razli, Mr. Kamal and Me.

Unfortunately, this company forbid us from taking pictures inside the production section and we have to respect their policy. None taken. Normally, many furniture companies didn't allow visitors to take pictures because of their secrecy that cannot be exposed to outside mostly the design and processes. Anyway, as a token of good will, Weng Meng Industries Sdn. Bhd. gave a permission to snap some photos at their gallery. Thank you very much I would say.

The craftmanship and beauty of wood.

Our next destination is Kilang Kayu-Kayan Victory Enterprise Sdn. Bhd. which is located at Kapar, Selangor. We were greeted by its Managing Director, Mr. Ricky Yap Leong Seng at the main office.

The main gate.

After short welcome brief by Mr. Ricky Yap, our group has been given a permission to tour the factory and thanks to the Victory Enterprise for allowing us to have some photos. According to Mr. Ricky Yap, there is nothing to hide seems every single factory in Malaysia that produce the same product as them possibly apply the same techniques. That is the reason we had the opportunity this evening.

A view inside one of the factory hangar.

Victory Enterprise is factory where the main manufactured product are the sawn timber of any grades from low to high quality finishes. This factory consists of several huge block that with no exception, loaded with a lot of sawn timbers product being stacked both left and right sides of it as shown in the picture above.

Packed sawn timbers ready to sell to hardware outlet owners.

Just about to end the tour, I saw some of that sawn timbers have been tied up as you can clearly see in the picture above. I asked one of the factory's personnel, what is really the purpose of doing that, and they explained to me that this packed sawn timbers are about to sell and pick up by local hardware outlets.

I took this opportunity to have a photo back grounded the smooth milling section at the factory. The trip has been postponed to the next day. What a very informative day I had there. To be continued in PART B.
